Make an OfferTHIS IS NOT A PRINTEach Rubbing is a hand made originalA BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ORIGINS AND ART OF BRASS RUBBINGS THESE RUBBING'S REPRESENT ART HISTORY, DURING THE MEDIEVAL PERIODMonumental Brasses were crafted by silversmiths and stonemasons during the Middle Ages, and became the height of fashion in Europe between 1280-1650. They were 'pictures' of actual people, andshow the customs, etc.of the period. To make a rubbing we stretch rag paper over the engraved plate, & use metallic waxcompound'sto rub the image. This is a beautiful hand made rubbing of Lady Margaret Peyton (nee Bernard) rather famously known as 'The Lace Lady', created with gold wax crayon on a special black rag paper. This rubbing is taken from a replica of a memorial 'brass' and measures 30" high X 15" wide; the original plate is featured in the parish church in Isleham. in the County of Cambridgeshire, England and is dated 1427. Lady Margaret's engraved effigy is featured on the wall of the parish church together with her husband Thomas Peyton and Thomas's second wife Margaret(nee Frances). Our Margaret here was the daughter of Sir John Bernard and his sole heir. She wears a butterfly headdress, briefly popular at that time, with gauze stretched over a wire framework and requiring a plucked hairline; it was thought to be improper for a lady to show any hair in public. Her gown is finely embroidered, not with lace in fact, but with fine Italian brocade. The 'brass' from which this rubbing was made is from an exhibition featured at The Washington National Cathedral by The London Brass Rubbing Centre and has more recently been on a National tour as part of their brass rubbing workshop. Rubbings like this one, hand made by one of their craft instructors, make spectacular wall hangings and are interesting and unusual gifts for friends and family. I will send it to you rolled up in a strong postal tube. It can be hung either from wooden dowels or matted and framed under glass. If you order more than one brass rubbing I will be pleased to offer a combined shipping cost if the rubbings can be rolled together and shipped at one time. Shipping and handling charges include insurance cover during transit. You can find a wide variety of gold, silver and unique multi-colored rubbings for sale in my eCRATER Store, The Wonders Of Britain. I hope you will visit soon.Annie
